Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor produced by a vaporizer or electronic cigarette. The vapor is produced from a material such as an e-juice or dry herb.
A vaporizer is an electric device that turns vaping material into vapor. A vaporizer usually consists of battery, main console or housing, cartridges, and atomizer or cartomizer. The battery generates the power for the heating element in the atomizer or cartomizer which contacts the vaping material and transforms it into vapor for inhalation.
E-juice, also called e-liquid, is the primary material used in vaporizers and consists of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin base, flavorings, and may or may not contain nicotine.
Propylene glycol is an organic compound. It is a colorless, nearly odorless, clear, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste that is very low in toxicity. Propylene glycol is mainly used in e-cigarettes for its temperature regulating, water retaining, and dissolving/bonding properties.
E-liquid contains vegetable glycerine which is thick. Propylene glycol is used to help thin out the e-liquid and make it simpler to fill tanks and vaporize. Propylene Glycol is easily absorbed by the cotton inside of an atomizer. The low density of Propylene Glycol also prevents any thick residue from building up on the heating element of the atomizer.
Vegetable glycerin is a simple polyol compound. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is typically produced from plant, palm, soy, or coconut oil. Glycerol is sweet-tasting, has fewer calories than sugar, and is of low toxicity.
Eliquid may or may not contain nicotine and is available in a variety of nicotine levels, typically 0mg – 6mg. You are therefore free to choose what nicotine level you prefer. Although most vapers who are trying to quit smoking tend to use eliquid that contains nicotine.
Nicotine is an organic compound and the primary alkaloid found in the tobacco plant, and especially in its leaves. When nicotine is absorbed into the body, it induces adrenaline production in your body, which leads to a short term increase in heartrate and blood pressure. These effects are not unlike the effects of caffeine, as both nicotine and caffeine are stimulants.
Vaping cannabis is less harmful than smoking it because the combustion of marijuana creates harmful substances that can irritate the lungs or the throat. Dry herb vaporizers do not burn the marijuana; instead they heat it up so that it produces a vapor. The vapor contains the THC and cannabinoids present in marijuana, but none of the irritants caused by combustion.
The ideal temperature for vaporizing cannabis is around 175 – 200°C (347 – 392°F). 210°C or 410°F is the best balance between efficient evaporation of terpenes and cannabinoids.
